Metallurgy and Materials Engineering

Department

This department was established way back in 1962 with the aim of producing professional and qualified engineers in the field of metallurgical engineering. Being the first department of the country it catered the needs of up-coming iron and steel industry having coastal iron and steel works (Pakistan Steel Mills) at Bin Qasim in 1972 and People Steel Mills at Manghopir, Karachi in the late seventies. In addition to that Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works, Pakistan Machine Tool Factory and other Automobile industries were being established in the country. Most of graduate engineers were employed by these metal working industries, and others were employed by these steel plant and sent to Japan and USSR for required training in different specialties. In the early seventies Pakistan Atomic Energy Authority was established and most of our graduates were employed in the field of Nuclear Materials at PINSTECH, KRL Islamabad and KANNUP Karachi.

This Department comprises of scanning electron microscopy laboratory (SEM), foundry engineering lab, welding laboratory, heat treatment lab, Mechanical testing laboratory, Chemical testing, (Spectro-meter Lab:), micro-structural laboratory and computer laboratory and has full time foreign trained and highly qualified faculty. The department is privileged to have visiting faculty from all the local industries. With the advent of new materials the department is also catering the teaching and training of our students in leather, textile, paper wood, ceramic polymers and composite materials. Our final year students carry out internship and project in the field of these diversified materials and indigenous coals at the local industries and research laboratories of PCSIR.

The department also carries out career counseling and makes efforts in the placement of our graduates in the industry and government departments. With the current support of HEC/ Ministry of Education, Government of Pakistan, the laboratories are being equipped with state of the art equipment for testing and evaluation of all the plastics, wood, textile, rubber and other hard materials.

The library is currently provided with all the volumes published on materials testing and evaluation by American Society of Testing Materials and other latest books published by ASM. Preparations are in hand to start MS/Ph.D. program in collaboration with foreign universities of UK and USA.
